5 Ways To Store Your Threads

You’re surrounded by threads…now what?

So you’re a cross-stitcher now. And you find yourself surrounded by so. much. thread. So you decide you need to establish an organizational system.
Do you put them on bobbins to store? Or put them in bags?
Should you organize by number? Or by color?
What’s a stitcher to do?!?!
Every stitcher is different and has different preferences; you have to find what works for you! So let’s talk about some different ways. There are no right ways or wrong ways — just find what works for you.

Bobbins

One of the most popular ways to stay organized is to use bobbins. You wind thread around each bobbin and label by number. This is a great way to easily see what you have and keep storage pretty minimal.
Bobbins can be stored in all sorts of containers: boxes, cabinets, etc.

Floss Drops (or thread drops)

Floss drops are another way to store your thread. Floss drops often have two holes — one to slip and store your thread and another for storage (such as a ring or clip to hold all the drops together).

Bags

A super simple way of storage is to put them in bags. No winding, cutting, or anything involved here - just throw it in a bag (many use snack size ziploc bags). This is pretty cost efficient and very reusable.
Some specialty bags are able to be purchased that have holes in them that make it easy to put them in a binder or on a ring for efficient storage as well.

Floss Holders

Stitchbow floss holders are also very efficient and effective; again, no winding — there are special ones that hold one skein each and provide compact storage.

Photo Boxes

This is my personal favorite (and how I store my threads)! I purchased a dozen or so 4x6 photo boxes and I label them and store skeins in them.

Whatever Works For You!

I recently took to social media to poll. And there were actually several people who use MULTIPLE ways to organize their floss. Some keep them in bags until they’re ready to use them on a project.
